Tools – Social Networks – which ones do I need to be on?

Often we see businesses jump into Social Media and the first thing they do is join as many Social Networks as they can.  This is great for exposure, but if you can’t maintain your presence on all of these networks you are shooting yourself in the foot.

So just how many social networks are out there?

There are 100’s of sites out there.  One site you can visit to get an idea of how many are available to you is http://namechk.com/ – this site will also allow you to see if your userid is available on these networks.

Here is another link that lists out over a thousand social networks that are available as well.  http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-social-networking-websites

With so many social networks out there how many should you be on?

We always suggest that businesses start with the following social networks:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest ( the latest hot new comer)
  • LinkedIn ( note: if you are a B2C company like a restaurant this one isn’t as important)
  • YouTube ( note: this one is optional too and can be added in)
  • Google+ ( note: this network has great potential for SEO proposes, however it can be added later)

Starting with these networks will allow you to get your feet wet and begin working them into your strategy so that you can increase your reach and exposure over time.

If six networks are a bit scary right now I would suggest that you start with Facebook and Twitter and then add the others over time.

There will always be thousands of networks out there that you can use, but you need to be effective and to truly be effective you cannot jump into social media on thousands of sites and be a rock star.
