Top Questions regarding Facebook Changes – Timeline for Business

Top Questions regarding Facebook Changes – Timeline for Business

Facebook’s Timeline for Business pages will be here soon.  With the March 30th deadline for Timeline for Pages we are getting a lot of questions around the changes.

The following are some of the top questions we are seeing.  Hopefully this will help you understand some of the changes.  Remember this is NOT optional …on March 30th Timeline will be in place for all Facebook pages.

Will I be forced to move my Facebook Page to Timeline?

Yes, this is a mandatory change – no opting out.  On March 30, 2012 all pages will have timeline applied to them.  Right now you have the ability to play around with your page and make changes and if you are ready you can switch now.

Can I see what my current page will look like once Timeline hits?

Yes, Facebook is providing a tool that you can use to preview what your current page will look like once it is converted to timeline.  You can access this tool here (https://www.facebook.com/pages/status/  ).

Can I find more information on the changes from Facebook?

Yes, Facebook has put together a tutorial that can be found here (http://www.learnfacebookpages.com/ )

Can I specify a default landing tab for non-fans?

Unfortunately, Facebook is taking this option away from us.  You can still have custom tabs, BUT, you cannot send your non-fans here by default.  You can however link to a particular tab if you are sending visitors to your Facebook page from your website or other marketing material that you provide a link to.

Can I customize the Custom Tab Images that appear under the Cover Photo?

Yes, you are able to customize these images.  The size will be 111 x 74px.  You however won’t be able to customize the look for the default apps from Facebook (Photos, Notes, Events, Videos, and Links).  Note that only four tabs will be displayed.

Will I still be able to have a photo strip on my page?

This has been removed and will no longer be available

What are the dimensions for the images for the new Pages on Timeline?

The timeline cover will be 851 x 315 pixels.  This is great for helping create and showcase your brand, but keep in mind you cannot include a call to action or even your phone number or web address in this image.  The profile picture which will sit to the bottom left of your cover has an upload size of 180 x 180 pixels, but will be scaled down and displayed as 32 x 32 pixels.

We understand that these changes may seem a bit overwhelming at this time, however we can assure you that once you get used to them life will be good.  In our previous post we covered some of the benefits of the changes which include the ability for fans to message you as a brand.

If you are struggling with these new changes here at SourceOne Technologies we can help you get ready.  If you just need a timeline cover designed we can take care of that for you.  If you want to really take advantage of the changes and use custom tabs to bring in more content and provide more opportunities for fan interaction we can do that too.

Please feel free to contact us from the form below so that we can discuss your needs and help you prepare for the change to Facebook Timeline for Business.

Facebook Pages – Changes are coming

Facebook Pages – Changes are coming

I am sure that most of you may have heard that there are some major changes from Facebook that are on the way.  These changes primarily impact Business Pages.  In this post we will provide an overview on some of these changes.

Cover Image

All Facebook pages will now be able to use a cover photo to help establish your brand and identity.  This is in place of the profile image that you used to have on the left hand side.  One great thing about this is that you will have A LOT more real estate to showcase your company or niche.  The previous profile image was 180 X 180 you will now have 851 x 315 pixels available to you.

We want to point out that Facebook is putting in some restrictions that page owners must pay attention to when creating your cover image.

  • You may not show any price or purchase information
  • No contact information can be displayed on the cover photo ( no telephone number, email, web address)
  • You cannot use Like or Share within the image
  • You may not use ANY call to action in your cover photo
  • The cover image cannot be used for any type of promotion
  • The cover image is meant to primarily be an image and not too many words

Custom Tab Changes

One great change we have seen is that you now have more space available to you for custom tabs.  Previously a custom tab was 520 pixels wide; you will now have 810 pixels available to you.  This will provide you with more space to showcase your information.

We have mixed feelings on the change being made that removes the ability for page owners to set a custom landing tab.  This was a great feature that allowed you to entice visitors to like your page since it was the first thing they saw if they were not a fan yet.

You can still link to this custom tab from your website when you are directing people to your website, however if they find you on Facebook both fans and non-fans will see the same content.

If you have multiple tabs with content then only the first 3 to 4 tabs will be visible – to see the other tabs you will need to click a drop down arrow.

Improved Communication Channels

Page visitors can now send messages to the page.  This is a great new way for your fans to be able to interact with you from your page.  Just be sure you monitor this.

Additional Features

Page owners will now be able to “Pin” important posts for up to 7 days.  This is a great feature so that you can promote and highlight special events and promotions you are running without the post being lost.

Pages can take advantage of milestone posts to share your story.  This would be great for showing things like opening day, expanding to new office, launched new product, etc.

Another great change is that Page admins will have more access to data and options.  This will help you with your engagement strategy for fans and to be able to measure what is happening.

Timeline is coming on March 30th if you are ready or not

Remember that the change to timeline for pages is NOT optional – all pages will convert to timeline on March 30th if you are ready or not.

If we have designed your Facebook page in the last 60 days we are taking care of these updates for you so that you will be ready for the change.  If we have designed your page longer than 60 days ago we are contacting you and offering you a discounted rate to get your page ready.

Don’t be left behind — timeline is coming and you need to be ready.  . We have options available for complete custom Facebook pages using timeline and for just the cover image if that is where you want to start.
